Social-Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a crucial component of student education and development, focusing on the acquisition of skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision making. These skills are essential for students to effectively navigate their academic and personal lives, fostering a positive school climate and enhancing overall well-being. The Illinois State Board of Education recognizes the importance of SEL and has established specific standards to guide its implementation in schools. By integrating SEL into our curriculum, we aim to support students in developing the social and emotional competencies necessary for success in school and beyond.

PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework implemented in grades K-5 throughout our district to promote positive behavior and enhance the overall learning environment. PBIS focuses on proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors, creating a positive school culture that encourages academic and social success. By using data-driven decision-making and consistent reinforcement of positive behaviors, PBIS helps reduce disciplinary issues and fosters a safe, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere. This approach is vital for student learning and development, as it supports students in building the social and emotional skills necessary for lifelong success.

Second Step

D34 utilizes the Second Step program in grades K-5 to support Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The Second Step program is designed to foster students' social-emotional development through lessons that teach skills such as empathy, emotion management, problem-solving, and responsible decision-making. By incorporating these lessons into the classroom, we aim to create a positive and inclusive school environment that enhances students' ability to learn and succeed both academically and personally. The program's goals are to build a foundation for lifelong social and emotional well-being, improve student behavior, and promote a safe and respectful learning community.

TBRI

Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) is a holistic approach to meeting the complex needs of students, particularly those who have experienced trauma. Implemented in grades 6-8, TBRI focuses on building trusting relationships, empowering students with self-regulation skills, and addressing behavioral and emotional challenges. By creating a supportive and understanding environment, TBRI helps students feel safe and connected, which is crucial for their academic and personal development. This approach is vital for fostering resilience, improving student behavior, and enhancing overall learning outcomes.
