Antioch CCSD 34 Board of Education Memo - November 19, 2021

Dear Antioch 34 Families,

Nothing signals that we're in the true midst of fall until we've stepped outside and wished we'd brought our jacket or told the kids to get ready for bed not realizing it's only 6:00 at night.  It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving and Christmas Break are just around the corner!

Given that it is the "season of thanks", the Board wanted to extend an enormous "thank you" to the school community for its resolve in keeping our school year positive and optimistic for the students.  Even with all the adjustments and modifications made to learning over the past two years, kids have developed a deep appreciation for their time learning in their respective buildings - investigating new things, walking the halls, spending time in the library, and attending school events.  It remains the Board's goal to keep children in school - learning, socializing, and thriving surrounded by excellent teachers and staff, but more importantly, engaging with their friends and peers.  So again, thank you so very much for all your help, support, and cooperation in making that possible.  We are truly grateful.

As the school year shifts into the winter and spring trimesters, the Board will be recognizing 50 years of learning at AUGS with a dedication and celebration.  In addition, we'll be working in conjunction with administration on the development of a Strategic Plan Kickoff that will involve collaborating with community stakeholders.  Furthermore, we are continuing to investigate our options for additional spacing at AUGS as well as exploratory class selections to bring to our middle schoolers.  We look forward to sharing more information with you in the coming months regarding these future plans.  That said, the Board is proud of what we've been able to achieve together as we are primed to keep forging ahead.  These past 6 years alone, District 34 has accomplished:

  • Full Day Kindergarten
  • Community School Redistricting - to achieve neighborhood schools
  • 1:1 Technology for all students K-8
  • Adding two beautiful additions to Petty and Oakland
  • Opening a dedicated Early Learning Center for our Pre-K Programs
  • Earning a Blue Ribbon for our 3 & 4 year old Pre-K Program
  • Awarded an A+ Bond Rating for continued Balanced School Budgeting
  • Adopting 21st Century aligned Amplify Science Curriculum & Lexia Core5 ELA Curriculum
  • Receiving the Distinguished School PLTW Award @AUGS (Project Lead the Way - STEM)
  • Receiving the IASB School Board Governance Award
  • Onboarding a top notch Administrative team to passionately lead our schools

Lastly, we are proud to partner with you, the school community.  We'd like to stress the importance of keeping the lines of communication open as questions and/or concerns arise.  We encourage you to reach out to your Building Leaders, Curriculum Directors, Finance Personnel, Superintendent, or us, the Board of Education.  Whether we meet in person, give you a tour, talk on the phone, or invite you to come in to view and/or discuss curriculum, we are all here to accommodate you.  The best way for families to gain the most accurate information is by going to the source.

Again, have a blessed Thanksgiving and enjoy your time with loved ones over the coming days.  Thank you for your commitment to the children and our schools.  As the saying goes, "Schools are truly at the heart of every community" - and we couldn't believe that to be more true.

Yours in education,

Mary Beth Hulting, Board President & the D34 Board of Education
