A Message from your Superintendent - May 1, 2020

Dear Antioch School District 34 Families,


I hope this communication finds you healthy, well, and safe. Remember, we are here for you; especially if you or your family are in need. We will continue to send out our weekly Check-in as a way for you to communicate with us, but do not allow that to be the only mechanism of outreach if you are in need.


Today is my first official full day as your Superintendent! I could not be more honored, humbled, grateful, or ready. This enormous responsibility does not fall lightly on me and I commit to serving our stakeholders to the absolute best of my ability. Through compassion, love, vulnerability, transparency, dedication, and hard work, I stand ready to serve. This will be the largest challenge of my professional life, but with it comes the largest opportunity of my professional life. Being afforded the chance to positively impact the experiences, opportunities, and outcomes of our students, staff, and families is incredibly motivating.


It is critically important for me to articulate how much you all mean to me. Though many of us have never even met, the only comparison I able to draw is how much I cared for and genuinely loved my daughters before they were ever in my arms. Being your partner in education, especially during this most difficult time, has fostered in me a sense of connection that is hard to explain, but will inform, inspire, and influence everything I do. We are in this thing together and I am proud to be here with and for you.


I have received an incredibly warm welcome to the district, for which I am profoundly appreciative. Through an amazing welcome video from the team at Hillcrest, the kind message and sweet treat dropped off by two teachers, the genuine and honest individual conversations I had with a couple staff members this morning, the kind emails I have received, and the warm responses to my recent posts, as I sit in this chair, in this office, this afternoon, I feel at home. Who’s got it better than me…NOBODY!

Please know that as a District, we are hard at work planning for a variety of scenarios regarding the end of this year and what our reality might entail for next year. Every decision we make will and has to be based around what is legal, safe, and scientifically validated. We continue to assess and address a plethora of unknowns and stand ready to demonstrate preparedness, prudence, precaution, and pro-action in our decisions and plans.


Below is some important information. In the coming weeks, more will be shared as it becomes finalized and available.


Remote Learning Planning Day

  • Wednesday, May 6 will be our fourth of five Remote Learning Planning Days.
    • Friendly reminder: The purpose of these days is to grant staff members a chance to plan, collaborate, coordinate, and develop their lessons and themselves. No student work will be assigned on these days, however, students will be able to use the day as an opportunity to catch up on or complete outstanding assignments, if they choose.


Summer School – as posted to our website

  • In this current reality, due to the COVID-19 closures, Antioch School District 34’s June Summer Learning will be canceled. This includes the following programs:
  • Summer School Intervention Classes
    • K-7 Literacy Academic Intervention
    • K-7 Math Academic Intervention
  • Summer School Enrichment Classes 
    • K-7 Math
    • K-7 Literacy
    • Sports & Games
    • Readers Theatre
  • Summer School Title I Grant Classes 
    • K-7 Literacy 
    • K-7 Math 
    • Kindergarten Jumpstart 
    • 1st Grade Jumpstart 


  • The district will utilize current Illinois State Board of Education and Governor Pritzker guidance in making all future decisions on summer programming, including August camps (Transition Camp for incoming 6th graders and Band/Orchestra Camps). We seek to keep our priorities in order as we work to balance the collective expectations of our state, our staff, ourselves, our students, and our families.


Extended School Year 

  • Extended School Year (ESY) is a part of students’ IEPs and will continue this summer.  At this time, students who qualify for Extended School Services will be participating using remote learning.  More information will soon be available for families of students eligible for ESY services.


Camp Invention

  • Camp Invention families will be contacted with more details about this summer’s offerings in the near future.



  • Families and caregivers should consider using positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in their homes on a daily basis. It is especially helpful when events disrupt normal routines – events like worldwide health pandemics. This practice brief provides recommendations for families and caregivers on how to use PBIS to continue to support their students’ social and emotional growth and minimize behavioral disruptions in the home.

  • As schools close and workplaces go remote to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, adult supporters everywhere are struggling to keep children healthy and occupied. If you’re anxious about how to protect and nurture kids through this crisis — often juggling work obligations at the same time — you’re in good (virtual) company. We know that we have a lot to figure out.

Stay Safe and Well

  • We strongly suggest and respectfully ask that we all continue to adhere to the mandated social distancing expectations. The wellness of our stakeholders is so important. In doing our part, we continue to request that staff and any visitors to our buildings continue to take their temperatures prior to coming on-site, as well as recommending the wearing of masks.
