D34 Board of Education Appoints Interim Co-Superintendents

Dear Antioch 34 Community Members:

The Antioch 34 Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointments of Interim Co-Superintendents, Ellen and Dr. John Correll.  Their appointment was approved on December 6th, 2019, at a Special Meeting of the Board of Education. Their start date will be effective on Wednesday, December 11th, 2019. After candidate interviews, it was clear that both Ellen and John offer the best bridge of continuity and leadership to our school community as we continue conducting our search for a permanent leader.

This husband and wife team come to the district with a wealth of educational experience. Ellen recently retired in June of this year after serving 14 years in the community of Grayslake as District 46’s Superintendent. During her tenure, she successfully negotiated several contracts, mentored principals as an administrative coach, and led their strategic planning committee. Like his wife, John also retired this past school year after serving 13 years as Superintendent of Salt Creek School District 48. There, he provided co-leadership with their student leadership workshop "Learning to Lead," successfully led a building referendum, and enhanced their professional and curricular growth and development initiatives. We look forward to their guidance and mentorship as they help conduct the day-to-day business of the district.  You will certainly see them out and about in the buildings working with staff and talking with students and community members. They are truly excited to get started!

As our new interims transition in, the Board would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the District 117 School Board and Dr. Jim McKay, Superintendent of D117 Schools. Dr. McKay had an immediate willingness to help us as our acting “interim-interim”, as our Board coined it, as he was invaluable these past few weeks. He is truly invested in the educational welfare of our students, and we couldn’t be more appreciative and grateful for Dr. McKay’s leadership and direction during this period of change.

On a final note, the Board is well underway in conducting our search for a new Superintendent of Schools. We will be bringing forth final candidates at a Superintendent Community Forum on Saturday, January 11th, from 10:00-12:00 p.m. at the Administrative Services Center. If you are interested in participating, please email khogan@antioch34.com & mhulting@antioch34.com, and we will add you to our mid-morning “meet and greet”. Candidates will be available to answer audience questions and mingle with guests!  Please R.S.V.P. by Wednesday, January 8th, to ensure adequate seating. We hope to see you there!

As always, our greatest appreciation is for the teachers, staff, and administration for their incredible hard work and dedication to the students of our district. They are the heart of our learning community.

In education,

Mary Beth Hulting, Board President
