About Me
Hi! My name is Mr. Luke Holm. Antioch Upper Grade School is something of a home for me. I attended AUGS as a middle schooler from 1999-2002. In middle school, I played on the varsity soccer team and went to the State Finals for track (4x100) and wrestling (105lbs). I attended ACHS and then went to NIU to become an English teacher. After graduating from college, I worked as an 8th grade ELA teacher at AUGS from 2012-2014. Then, when my wife graduated from college in 2014, we moved to San Jose, California and lived there for the next seven years.
In California, I taught 7th grade ELA, ELD, Media Arts, Social Justice, and Mindfulness. On top of my academic responsibilities, I also ran the school website, was in charge of technology and troubleshooting for the staff, led the before and after school homework club club, organized and proctored the schoolwide Spelling Bee, and coached soccer and volleyball (1st place three years in a row). I also tutored 5th-12th grade students on how to take the English portions of the SAT. All was good in the golden state, but when COVID struck, my district went to full-time remote learning for the remainder of 2019 and throughout the entirety of the 2020 school year.
Remote learning afforded my wife and I a unique opportunity to move back to the Midwest and teach our California students from Antioch, IL. We moved home to save money and also because we'd just had a baby and needed help with childcare (in a time when childcare services were closed). After finishing the 2020 school year, we decided to remain in Illinois and start looking for nearby jobs. Eventually, I took the 2020-21 school year off to be a stay-at-home dad, establish our home in the Midwest, and work on my writing as an independent author.
Last year, I taught 8th grade ELA, and now I'm back at it again. I am so excited for the 2023-24 school year! It's great to be back with such an awesome staff and community. I look forward to what this year brings. Please feel free to contact me if you ever need anything: lholm@antioch34.com. I look forward to working with all of you very soon. Take care!
