Fluency

  • Fluent readers read with appropriate rate, accuracy, and expression.  Increased fluency leads to better comprehension because the child does not need to pay as much attention to figuring out the words and his or her mind is freed to focus on the meaning of the text.

Research has shown that the best way for readers to improve their fluency is through repeated readings of familiar stories.  Please encourage your child to read the books they bring home again and again so that they can read fluently with good accuracy, speed, and expression!   You can model fluent reading by reading a page and then asking your child to read it the same way you did!

Please visit the Listen to Reading section of this website for links to stories that are read aloud by fluent readers!
