  • Penny Plate

Skills: Practice finding number combinations for 10

    Materials Needed:

    10 pennies

    Plate

    Blank Paper

    Players:

    2

Object of the game: To identify the number of pennies hidden under a plate.

    Directions:

    1. Players take turns. Player A turns the plate upside down, hides some of the pennies under the plate, and places the rest of the pennies on top of the plate.

    2. Player B counts the pennies on top of the plate and guesses how many are hidden underneath. If the guess is correct. Player B gets a point.

    3. Players trade roles and keep a tally of their points. The player who has more points at the end of 10 rounds is the winner.

    Strategy:

If there is a large quantity of pennies on top of the plate, encourage the child to count-on from that number. For example, if six pennies are showing, say out loud, “6-7,8,9,10. There are four pennies hidden beneath the plate.”

If there is a small quantity of pennies on top of the plate, encourage the child to count back each penny starting at the total number of pennies. For example, if three pennies are showing, say out loud, “10-9,8,7. There are three pennies hidden beneath the plate.”

Variations: The game can be played with any increment of pennies.
