The 6th graders finished up personal privacy this week looking at the future of privacy and some of the potential challenges. The quiz was today and, unfortunately, not enough students studied. Each time we have a quiz, I provide all the notes and a study guide about a week ahead of time. I am hopeful that for the next quiz more students will use those resources.

Happy New Year! We started looking at personal privacy this week and how to try and keep our information as secure as possible. There truly is not any privacy online, but we can at least make it harder for people to get our information. We finished today looking at the security of our passwords.

The 6th graders have been a fantastic job of making connections between their digital footprints and their online reputation. They were challenged this week to make their online persona be as close as possible to their offline. We looked at how the words they type and images they post are public and permanent. Today I shared with them about legal issues with sexting as well as how inappropriate pictures can be used in dangereous ways. Once you post or share something, you lose all control of it.

The 6th graders dug into digital footprints and how they create an online reputation. The concept that if you are a good digital citizen and make mostly good choices online, then you'll have a good footprint. That, in turn, will create a decent online reputation. Middle school and high school are important times to start thinking about how to make sure your online reputation is as good as possible. Things that might be considered funny today, might not be seen that way by future colleges or future employers.

This week we finished up introducing the idea of digital citizenship. We specifically looked at how good digital citizens respect themselves and others. The 6th graders took a quiz yesterday and some found out they may need to study a bit ore for the next one. After Thanksgiving we will start looking at our digital footprints and onlne reputations.
