Yoga

  • So you thought yoga was just stretching???

    Think again!

    • Healthy students lead to healthy school performance in many areas. Not only does yoga support physical fitness objectives; it provides students with information and skills to make and sustain healthy lifestyle choices, teaches strategies to improve student attentiveness and reduce anxiety, and fosters a healthy social environment within the classroom and schools – all of which better enable both students and schools to meet their academic objectives.

    • On an individual level, yoga teaches students to develop self-awareness and self-management skills, to use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships and to demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts.

    • In the community, yoga allows students to understand common characteristics of different cultures and explain how cultural contributions have shaped our society over time. Students will have a deeper understanding about how and why groups and institutions are formed, what roles they play in society, and how individuals and groups interact with and influence each other.

    • Academically, yoga facilitates learning readiness, which can improve student achievement in core learning as espoused by the Common Core State Standards Initiative and other state and national curriculum standards.  Yoga also cultivates learning and innovation skills, an integral part of 21st century learning. So yes, yoga is stretching; stretching both the mind and body for success!
