Today was our 100th day of school! Read to Succeed forms are due by February 24th. The yellow form was sent home months ago and this is a great way to reward students with a free one-day pass to Six Flags after reading for six hours. Any and all reading is accepted on the form. This includes reading books, magazines, newspapers, and comic books. Our third grade students will be singing for us on Tuesday, February 7th. The concert for the school will be at 1:00 p.m. and the evening concert will be at 7:00 p.m. Next week students will be allowed to purchase a “Valentine postcard” for 50 cents. The Student Council will attach a small candy treat and deliver them on the afternoon of 2/14. Students should not eat the candy at school as it is not a fruit or veggie but can take it home as they will their other treats that may be brought in. The money is being raised for a charity by the Oakland Student Council. Students will be allowed to exchange Valentine's Day cards on February 14th with their classmates, but we will not be having a party that day. North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas Minnesota, Iowa, Mis-sou-ri Wisconsin, Illinois Michigan, Indiana OHIO! Keep practicing these words! Our character word for February is Caring. What is Caring? I care. I can show compassion by noticing when others are uncomfortable or suffering and trying to help them. I care. I can show empathy by trying to understand how another person feels and thinks. I care. I can show charity by giving more of my time, energy, or money to help other people. I care. I can show mercy by forgiving people when they make mistakes. I care. I can show forgiveness by trying to understand why a wrong doing happened, accepting it and moving on. I care. I can show conviction by speaking up when I believe something is wrong and goes against what I believe. I care. I can show commitment by being willing to pay the price and work hard for what I believe. I care. I can show persistence by being determined to not give up. I care. I can show endurance by following through on my plans. Reagan was the winner of our caring contest. Word Work will be words with the prefix cent-, centi-, dec-, and deca-. The words are century, decade, decagon, centipede, centimeter, decathlon, decimal, and centennial. We will work on these words all week and have a quiz on the definition of each word on Friday. A read aloud will go home on Monday and it is due on Thursday, February 9th. We are still working on Spelling Unit 11 this week. "Reptile Rampage" is an education-only event that is designed to teach people about the joys of nature and reptiles in particular. We have over 75 exhibitors representing private collections, nature centers, museums such as the Field Museum of Natural History, colleges and universities and herpetological societies. It's very child and family oriented and there's something for everyone. The proceeds will not only benefit the animals that live at the Wildlife Discovery Center (that your students get to interact with) but we are also helping to support the Philippine Crocodile Conservation Project to help save one of the world's most critically endangered animals on earth. This event is sponsored by the farm that we visited on our Field Trip. The event is planned for Sunday, March 11th from 10-4 at the Lake Forest Rec. Center on 400 Hastings Road in Lake Forest. The cost is $5 per child and $8 per adult. You will meet BUBBA the famous gator, talk to experts, meet giant snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians and tortoises. There will be children's crafts and a silent auction. You can even earn a Scout badge ($5 for the patch). A flyer with a coupon will come home in a future Friday folder. Thank you for reading this message and have a great week.
